The Church and Katrina

I am not going to waste space cracking the Bush administration and the remains of FEMA for the ridiculous response to the disaster. I am not going to even get into the whole debate over whether President Bush likes us Black folks or not.

I want to continue to challenge the Church of Jesus Christ to minister not only to those displaced and devastated by the hurricane but also to reach out across denominational lines. I have heard story after story of churches around the country adopting those fellowships destroyed by the hurricane. Some are putting up displaced pastors and their families. Others are feeding survivors as best they can.

I was watching “Oprah”, something I rarely do , but her show the other day was based in New Orleans. I will never forget the cry of a middle-aged woman when asked what they needed while being holed up at the Superdome: “WE NEED MINISTERS DOWN HERE! MINISTERS!”

The hurting are calling for the Christ we serve.
