A few years ago when the emerging conversation or whatever we’re calling it really began to garner the attention of evangelicals, I can remember sitting in a Starbucks with laptop in tow sipping coffee and wondering whether I was “emergent” (please keep in mind that I was not aware of any difference between emerging/emergent). Sunday after Sunday, I tossed around ideas with likeminded twenty- and thirty-somethings about what the church should be doing and how we should be doing it.
The issue, in hindsight, wasn’t the tag but rather the frustration of stagnation in the local church. What was I thinking?
Well, the coffee was good anyway.
So was the Wi-Fi.
