The Cult of Personality and Penn State…and What Christians Can Learn

There are a number of lessons we can learn from the tragic downfall of a lauded sports juggernaut like Penn State and the captain of its ship, the late Joe Paterno:

  1. The leader should never be bigger than a commitment to integrity and truth.
  2. Leaders must remember that they are accountable to others; there are no Lone Rangers.
  3. Greed and lust for power are two surefire killers of a great reputation.
  4. Look out for the vulnerable and God will champion the cause; look out for the oppressor and your doom is assured.

The sad part is, we have witnessed Christian leaders caught up in some of the same drama. How can we as Christian leaders protect ourselves from the foxes that spoiled the vine at Penn State?
