Haiti, Suffering, and the Sovereignty of God

leave a comment »

Whenever a catastrophic tragedy occurs anywhere in the world, I can always count on two things: first, the body of Christ knows how to pray and mobilize for the good of the suffering in need and second, Pat Robertson will say something stupid that the media will magnify.

I won’t do their dirty work.

Many a book and dissertation have been written about the mystery of God’s sovereignty and how one explains suffering fits into the theological assertion that God is good and just. But in times like this, arguments over the issue won’t really address the immediate needs of the Haitian people.

What they need is us helping, serving, rescuing, comforting, and loving them. Theological grandstanding is a poor stand-in for the incarnational presence of the Lord Jesus Christ through His Church.

“Port-Au-Prince is flattened.”

Such is a the heartrending quote from devastated Haiti in the wake of a catastrophic earthquake. Pray not only for the country but also for churches who were doing missions work before the tragedy. Lord, have mercy.

Tiger’s Moment of Truth & Culture’s Lame Response

Tiger in better days

A fine mess. That’s the only way I can describe it. But instead of piling on to what is shaping up to be a laundry list of adulterous affairs on the part of the world’s greatest golfer, I focus instead on how the sports media has responded.

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard sports reporters express more concern about seeing Tiger miss games over the scandal that has erupted than they do about seeing a man and his family ruined.

Yet, if the alleged adulterer in question were a minister or vocal/visible Christian, they would call for “accountability” of the guilty in the name of integrity. Hmmmm…..

What the Flip Is Wrong With Isiah Thomas?

leave a comment »

As some of my older relatives back home would say, “Some folks done lost they mind!”  So I check out my Google news ticker thingie and read the news that Isiah Thomas and MSG (N.Y. Knicks) were found liable in a sexual harrassment lawsuit brought by a former female employee.  The whopping $11.6 million dollar judgment is not what bothers me.

What has me royally pissed off is a comment the NBA legend made during a videotaped deposition about calling the African-American plaintiff, Anucha Browne Sanders, a b*tch.  Roland Martin’s blog notes:

She says Thomas frequently cussed her out, even referring to her as a “bitch” on numerous occasions. He said he never did, but did offer during a videotaped deposition that he was offended when if a white man called a black woman a bitch, but didn’t feel the same when a black man did it.

So let me get this straight, Isiah.  If a white man disrespects me, then you would be offended but if you–a Black man—call me a b*tch, then it’s cool?

The devil IS a lie, baby.  Brotha, wake up and shut up.

Thomas’ illogical and disrespectful treatment of black women are exactly what we sistas have been complaining about.  Thomas appears to believe that he as a black man has some privilege to disrespect black women while pretending to “honor” the black woman by being offended if a white man uttered the same words he has not problem dropping on us.

Whatever, Izzy.

This kind of psychological contradiction is a sympton of a bigger problem in the Black community that needs to be dealt with.  You see the same kind of foolishness with gangsta rap and a lot of hip-hop music where black women are denigrated, called b*tches and hos.

And sadly, too many of us black women are only to happy to dance to disrespect with tight beats.

Thankfully, there are black men out there who know who they are, who love and appreciate the black women in their lives and would shove a basketball up Izzy’s behind for the nonsense he dropped.

Lord, help us please.

Tim Stevens Clarifies the “50 Most Influential List” Controversy

with 2 comments

Tim Stevens over at Leading Smart happens to be a friend of John Vaughan, president of Church Growth Today and confirmed that in fact, contrary to what the article tried to imply, Vaughan did in fact provide Jason Christy with the list of the 50 most influential churches.  In other words, the list is legit.

Stevens went on to state that:

John Vaughan is a friend of mine, so I decided to go right to the source. I spoke with John today and it appears that Ms. Elliott was incorrect. John did provide the list of influential churches to The Church Report. Although he was aware of some of the accusations, he decided to partner with Jason Christy one more time.

Enough said.  Again, thanks to Tim for setting the record straight.Hopefully, will correct at least this part of their article.  Check out the press releases from Vaughan and Christy as well on Tim’s blog.  Peace.
